It is a minor miracle that Cripple Creek Backcountry has done as well as we have in Carbondale Colorado. When we started back in 2012 the idea of touring only shop located 30 minutes from the nearest snow seemed impossible. But with a focus on service work, community events and specialization deep in the niche of backcountry touring we were able to fulfill the needs of an incredible local skinning culture right when it was truly exploding.
Our dream through the early years was always to have a service and demo center located right on the snow. We love the Roaring Fork area (especially the Crystal river valley) for its' remoteness and the incredible snow, but when looking up valley to Aspen there are already some fine shos selling uphill gear and when a customer really wants the selection and knowledge we have to offer, Carbondale is only a short drive away.
Vail became the obvious location for our second base of operations. It is close enough to Carbondale that we can share our huge inventory, but far enough away to service a new growing uphill population. Over the past 5 years we have seen an explosion in resort uphill traffic and Vail has done a great job welcoming in the community. They offer free designated uphill routes and even an uphill hotline so you can avoid the pesky winch cats grooming at night. Most of all we found the perfect space located right next to the Lionshead parking structure only a short walk to the snow. This will open up an entirely new opportunity for demoing uphill gear and having on snow events and gatherings.
The view of the Eagle Bahn Gondola from the shop, just add snow
Here is a quick list of what we will bringing to the snow.
- Giant demo fleet with special thanks to Scarpa, Dynafit and DPS
- Every ski touring jig under the sun. Don't have your high-end backcountry setup mounted anywhere else.
- Coffee and beer. We believe the coffee and beer bar from our Carbondale store is essential to expressing our personal and community values.
- Free Avalanche Education Nights
- On snow clinics. How to ski tour, transition and advanced tricks of the trade.
- A great place to meet skinning partners and learn more about this incredible sport.
Thank you to our friends at Scarpa for supplying us with a huge new demo fleet, featuring the new and improved F1 Evo
For years we have had customers buy their gear from cripplecreekbc.com and plan their yearly ski trips to stop by, get their boots fitted and grab a beer at the shop. So if Vail is your local mountain, next ski destination or even if you are just driving by, stop on in and tell a friend. We will have the doors open November 1st, but will be in there unpacking boxes, building work benches and getting ready for an entirely new, ski touring specific, service and demo store.
Opening party details to follow.
