The Backland 85 UL is the widest ski in Atomic's range of ultra-light touring skis. Just so you've got the lay-of-the-land, the Backland UL series has 65, 78 and 85 millimeter widths. Got it? The 85 UL weighs in at an incredible 1080g per ski, which makes it essentially a racing ski, just wider and more stable. Which is why we mounted it for the Aspen Power of 4 ski mountaineering race as a demo for locals or first-time racers coming to town that did not want to race a traditional, skinny-ski at 65mm underfoot.
This demo was set up to give new racers confidence with greater stability from the wider overall shape, a 118mm tip to deflect uneven, hard snow, and the additional wood and Carbon Fiber in the core. The ski has an all-mountain rocker profile where there is 15% rocker in the tip, camber in the middle and a flat tail. Its flex pattern is soft in the tip, stiff in the middle and medium in the tail. A perfect profile for all conditions.
The construction of the BL 85 UL is interesting in that, it is a semi-cap, but has a significant amount of PU sidewall that is thick underfoot and extends nearly all the way to the tail. This means it will ski damper and suck up some of the inconsistencies in the snow better than almost any other ultra-light touring/racing ski. Long story short; the Backland 85 UL can handle a race with aplomb, become a daily trainer trusted to get you downhill, and even long touring days on easy Springtime terrain. If you are looking to get into racing, but want to buy something that inspires confidence, this ski stands apart from many others.
This demo setup comes with the now famous (at Cripple Creek) Salomon MTN binding (with brakes!), that serves as a multifunctional "tour-to-race" binding because you simply flip a riser over the pins to go up. Never having to rotate your heel piece makes you faster.
Having seen maybe one racer, this particular set of skis in in excellent condition. The tops and bases are in excellent condition and the edges are sharp with no burrs or scratches. What a buy!
