The Atomic Backland 85 UL W Alpine Touring Ski is a new edition to the Backland series for the 20/21 season. The 85 UL W is a female-specific ultralight (UL) touring ski designed for long days in the mountains - be it on-resort training, backcountry tree skiing, or big-mission ski mountaineering. This ski is a competent and comfortable all-season [lightweight] touring option.
The Atomic 85 UL W starts with the Backland's shared construction of Ultra Light Woodcore wrapped in a Carbon Powered laminate. This build creates for a lightweight, responsive, and torsionally rigid ride. The HRZN tip is shaped like a boat hull (dual-rocker) to keep your tip above powder and crud, and also helps turn-initiation. This makes the 85 mm waisted ski ride more confidently in deeper conditions. The shape of the skis features a 15/85/0 profile, which implies 15% tip rise, 85% camber underfoot, and a flat [0% tail rise] tail. The 85 UL includes tip notches to indicate its speed-oriented build, helping to facilitate transitions with tip-rip skins. Overall, the Atomic Backland 85 UL W is a modern ultralight touring ski that is a surprisingly versatile tool in the mountains.
The Women's specific model of the 85 UL features a softer flex profile to accommodate lighter riders. The softer flex will help with turn initiation and reduce the unnecessary 'snappiness' of a beefier build. If you're a lady and looking to spend more time out in the mountains: in the alpine, in the trees, on the resort or anywhere else that one might find lightweight and playful skis useful, look to the Atomic Backland 85 UL W.
