The Volkl BMT 90 is a big mountain tool ready to get put to work for the entirety of the backcountry ski season. It's a very versatile touring ski, able to dip its toes into many different sub-disciplines of ski touring be it speed touring, ski mountaineering, or a daily, high-performance backcountry ski. This expert-level touring ski packs a metric ton of downhill skiability into a lightweight touring package. The BMT 90 has a modest amount of tip and tail rise with camber underfoot. The tip rise helps keep the ski above variable conditions, as to not nose-dive forward. The tip rise paired with the complimentary tail rise allows for an easier turn initiation [by bringing the widest part of the ski closer to the binding]. Because of this modern tip and tail rockered shape, the BMT 90 is a lightweight touring option that can navigate a multitude of snow conditions with confidence.
Volkl's 'Made in Germany' stamp brings with it some of the most advanced ski design and manufacturing in the world. All of this technology (mentioned below) is meant to help you ski farther, faster, and with more style*. The Volkl BMT's construction starts with a Multi Layer Woodcore Light. This advanced core combines durable, hardwood beech in the middle of the ski for better binding retention with lightweight poplar throughout the length. Volkl then shapes the core into what they call 'Central Woodcore Ridge with superslim wings.' This sophisticated cross-sectional design makes the ski's material more effective at handling the shear forces experienced while skiing. This means a high torsional rigidity for a low weight (it's the same principle of how an I-beam uses its material effectively to support structural loads). The shaped core is wrapped in a cross weave of carbon fiber called Full Carbon Jacket (lots of badass proprietary names). The carbon fiber maintains the snappy liveliness and shape profile of the ski. This means that your ski will feel like brand new for longer compared to a similar ski that only has carbon stringers or no carbon at all. To seal off this space-age snow-slider is Volkl's ICE.OFF top sheet. This top sheet is a unique material that will reduce the amount of ice and snow buildup on the ski while touring. When counting grams for longer ski missions, this feature can contribute to huge weight savings. At a final weight of 1250 grams (163 cm in length), the BMT 90 provides ample downhill ski ability for such a lightweight contender.
Since the majority of time spend ski touring is traveling uphill, accommodate your skis accordingly (choose something lightweight). But, once you get to the top, the Volkl BMT 90 will continue to provide performance in the form of stable, lively, and dare I say fun, downhill skiing. This ski is towards the top of my list for an all-season touring ski. Try it out to see for yourself.
