The stiffest and most powerful women's specific touring boot from Scarpa, now stiffer and lighter. Scarpa reimagined the details around a classic, unchanged, women's specific fit to elevate the levels with the new Gea RS. This is the boot for big tours that end in un-compromised skiing styles with full sized skis. No skimo here. Let's get in to the details.
The Gea RS' distinguishing characteristic as compared to the standard Gea is the Carbon LFT. Scarpa infused Carbon in to the Grilamid lower cuff around the ankle to prevent cuff bulging in the heel. This helps transmit all of the power from the flexing the upper cuff into the ski while also adding lateral stiffness. The fit that has worked for so many over the years remains the same. A tight heel pocket with a wider last and toe box keeps you snug where you want it, roomy where you don't. The ankle strap and buckle make sure your heel stays back in that heel pocket. The upper cuff is closed by the micro adjustable buckle and a wide powerstrap to give a solid fit on the shin and calf.
Other innovations this season pertain to weight and stride for the uphill portion of your tours. The Wave Closure system on the lower cuff shaves weight without decreasing foot hold by using a single buckle that pulls ona cable from 2 attachment points. The Walk/Ski lever is simplified and lightened giving you less friction and less to break. The Grilamid, Pebax, and Carbon shell materials, Vibram soles, and Intuition liner were all designed and paced with weight in mind. These changes net about a 120 grams of weight savings per boot, which really add up over thousands of powder seeking steps.
The Gea RS will be on the feet of guides, ski patrollers and freeride touring athletes world wide this season. Whether you fall into one of those categories or you simply prefer a sturdier boot for skiing more aggressively or turning a full sized ski, the Gea RS should be on your shortlist. Come try it on today!
