The North Face Men's Summit L3 50/50 Down Hoodie is a huge step forward in active down insulation. The jacket features TNF's 50/50 down construction which is a layering of independent down baffles that promote airflow during aerobic activity. You can use window shutters as an analogy when considering this jacket's design. The down baffles are overlapped on top of each other. When you stand still, there are no openings in the baffles. But when you begin to move, the baffles separate, allowing the jacket to breathe in between each down baffle. The ventilation is at its max when you're moving, while conversely, the insulation is best when standing still. Inside the coat is 800-fill Prodown, which retains its loft even when wet [due to its water repellent finish]. The coat is cut with a slim fit and features two large zippered exterior pockets and two internal drop pockets. This is a svelte layer that functions flawlessly when it comes to moving in the mountains. Grab this piece to stay warm and dry - moving or not - on your next backcountry mission.
