Ski piolets are passengers most of the time, and rarely called to action. As such, ski mountaineering piolets must be bare-boned and slimmed down. They also need to be brutally tough and trustworthy. The Hummingbird fits the bill. It is one of the lightest, fastest, toughest ski mountaineering piolets you may find. One of the most efficient, too, with an anchoring titanium head. It won’t let you down.

  • Lightweight titanium head
  • Aircraft grade anodized, sandblasted aluminum curved shaft
  • Dual-textured grip
  • Pick and adze protectors included
  • Weight:  200g (45cm); 212g (50cm)
  • Conform to the CE / EN 13 089 ice axes certification
  • Conform to the ISMF regulations (50cm)
  • Ideal uses: Ski touring, Ski Mountaineering competition, Mountaineering

Perfect ski mountaineering axe

Looked at this the Petzl ride, gully, and corsa race. This won out for the following reasons. 1) petzl doesn’t make 50cm (only 45). At 6’1” that extra 5cm is super helpful- this one has been comfortable in cane type use. 2) the curve is more useful when swinging tool. 3) can get a blue ice pommel which makes far more useful when swinging ice tool style. It’s solid enough I bet you could do some minor ice climbing on it.

This has performed great and even at 50cm still fits in my pack. One review I read said light enough to bring on the days when you don’t know if you’ll need it. Couldn’t agree more. It’s perfect for that.
