Why We Like It

  • The race-inspired brake engages and disengages as you flip the first heel flap, so the transition from climb to descent is one motion.
  • Lateral release adjusts from 6 to 12 at the rotating heel, enough range for most fitness tourers and racers.
  • The Speed toe uses a hybrid hole pattern, narrow at the front and wide at the rear, for better power transmission, and the Snowpack Proof System keeps ice out of the toe lock.
  • A T-shaped heel plate adds 30 mm of length adjustment and spreads the load into the ski.

Best Uses

  • Resort uphill laps
  • Fitness touring
  • Skimo race training
  • Summer athletes cross-training on snow
  • Skis from 76 to 97 mm underfoot

Mounting and Setup Advice

Choose the brake equal to or up to 15 mm wider than the ski waist: 80, 86, 91 or 97 mm. ATK matches the Timepacer 12 to skis 76 to 97 mm wide and 650 to 1,300 g, for skiers from 60 to 105 kg. A shop should set lateral release for your weight, height, age, boot sole length and skier type and confirm the fixed vertical release suits you.

ATK requires tech inserts at the toe and heel in good condition and a boot model on its compatibility list for this binding, plus two checks at mounting: in climbing mode the boot must pivot at least 80 degrees on the toe pins before touching the toe piece, and tilted forward it must rest on the toe jaws, not the front lever. The binding needs a boot with certified tech inserts. Bring your boots in so we can check the inserts and set the heel on its plate.

Our Verdict

The ATK Timepacer 12 Touring Binding pairs a light Speed toe with a rotating heel that adjusts lateral release from 6 to 12 and a brake that works off the first heel flap, at 250 g per binding. Vertical release is fixed, which suits fitness touring more than freeride. Skiers who want adjustable vertical release should look at a heavier touring binding; skiers who lap the resort uphill and want a brake should start here.
