The Dynastar Vertical 88 is a ski mountaineering tool ideal for human-powered technical skiing. You'll use these skis for light and fast touring when crampons ice tools and maybe even ropes are involved. The Vertical 88 shares the M-Tour construction which is a unique blend of paulownia and PU in the core and a layer of basalt on top. Paulownia is a lightweight wood to save weight and PU is a dampening polymer to reduce chatter. PU is typically used in sidewall construction (this ski does have a full sidewall), but incorporating PU into the core gives this featherweight touring ski a surprising stability. On top of that core is a layer of uncommonly used basalt. Basalt has similar mechanical properties to fiberglass but with 25% less weight. It also offers dampening properties, which creates great reinforcement to the lightweight core. What makes the Vertical 88 a ski mountaineering tool is it's hard-snow oriented shape. The ski features a moderate tip rocker and aggressive camber throughout the rest of the ski. That type of shape works really well for short-radius, technical skiing which requires edge control and stability. If you want a steep skiing / ski mountaineering tool where every gram counts - look to the Dynastar Vertical 88.
