The Petzl Ride Ice Axe is the minimum viable axe for ski mountaineering, and that is a compliment. A steel head gives it the holding power of a full-size axe where it counts, while a curved shaft and machined grip make it work in the hand for both plunging and self-arrest. The pick tapers to a fine point for penetration in firm snow. It is short and light enough to disappear inside a pack rather than strapped to the outside, which matters on a descent where a protruding tool becomes a hazard in a fall. Unisex.
