Scarpa Maestrale Touring Boot

Backcountry skiers who want one boot for everything are who the Scarpa Maestrale is built for. A 115 flex on a generous 102 mm last skis a 100 mm ski confidently without demanding an expert to bend it, and the polyurethane shell damps chatter in the way a resort boot does. At 1,460 g per boot the Scarpa Maestrale sits in the middle of the touring range, light enough for dawn patrol and substantial enough for a long and challenging backcountry day.

Why We Like It

  • A 102 mm last is one of the roomier shells in performance touring and fits a wide forefoot without shell work.
  • A polyurethane shell and cuff damp vibration the way a resort boot does, which firm snow rewards.
  • The four-point closure combines a buckle, an HRS heel strap, a Wave M-LITE cable closure and a power strap for even pressure.
  • Certified tech inserts and a lugged Vibram Cayman LT rubber outsole handle the bootpack as capably as the binding.

Best Uses

  • All-around backcountry touring
  • Skis 90 to 105 mm underfoot
  • Hut trips and multi-day traverses
  • Dawn patrol laps and rolling terrain
  • Skiers who want one touring boot for everything

Bootfitter's Advice

The Scarpa Maestrale runs a 102 mm last, which is the roomier of the two Maestrale shells now that the Scarpa Maestrale RS has moved to 101 mm. A high instep and a wide forefoot are generally accommodated without shell work.

A polyurethane shell punches less readily than a Grilamid one, a tough engineering nylon, and holds heat differently, so shell work should be done by a fitter who knows the material. Plan on molding the Intuition Pro Flex Touring liner, a heat-moldable foam liner, to set heel hold.

Compare the Scarpa Maestrale

Maestrale vs. Scarpa Maestrale RS

The Scarpa Maestrale RS is the stiffer, narrower boot at a 130 flex on a 101 mm last with four buckles and a Booster Active Power Strap. The Scarpa Maestrale is 115 on 102 mm, 110 g lighter, and more forgiving. Skiers charging hard choose the Scarpa Maestrale RS; skiers wanting comfort and range choose the Scarpa Maestrale.

Maestrale vs. Scarpa Gea

The Scarpa Gea is the women's build in the same family, at a 100 flex on a 102 mm last with a women's-specific cuff geometry for a lower calf and a shorter size run. The Scarpa Maestrale runs 115 flex and covers 24.5 to 32. Calf shape and size decide between them.

Maestrale vs. Dynafit Radical Pro

These cross-shop as all-mountain touring boots. The Dynafit Radical Pro uses the Hoji Lock walk mechanism and a stiffer rating, while the Scarpa Maestrale is 115 flex with a polyurethane shell and a four-point closure. Foot volume and walk-mechanism preference usually decide.

Common Questions

What bindings work with the Scarpa Maestrale?
The Scarpa Maestrale has a Vibram Cayman LT sole certified to ISO 9523 (Touring) with tech inserts, so the Scarpa Maestrale runs pin/tech (low-tech) bindings, AT/frame bindings, and MNC bindings that accept touring soles. The Scarpa Maestrale is not compatible with standard ISO 5355 (Alpine) bindings. Confirm any MNC pairing against the specific binding model.
Did the Scarpa Maestrale get the four-buckle redesign?
No. Scarpa moved the RS models to a four-buckle closure with a Booster power strap, but the Scarpa Maestrale keeps its four-point system of an upper buckle, HRS strap, Wave M-LITE closure and power strap, and keeps the Speed Lock MLT walk mechanism. The Scarpa Maestrale did change shell material, moving to polyurethane.
What is the range of motion on the Scarpa Maestrale?
Scarpa does not publish a cuff rotation figure for the current Scarpa Maestrale. Earlier generations were listed at 60 degrees, but that number belongs to a different shell and does not carry over. Publishing a withdrawn number would be worse than leaving the field open.
How much does the Scarpa Maestrale weigh?
Scarpa lists 1,460 g per boot at size 27. That places the Scarpa Maestrale in the middle of the alpine touring range, 110 g lighter than the Scarpa Maestrale RS and heavier than a dedicated ski mountaineering boot.
What foot shape fits the Scarpa Maestrale best?
The Scarpa Maestrale is built on a 102 mm last, which suits a medium to high volume foot and a wide forefoot. A narrow heel or a low instep may need liner volume or a footbed to lock down. Confirm fit with a shell check.
Can the Scarpa Maestrale be punched and molded?
Yes, the polyurethane shell can be worked by a fitter familiar with the material. Also, the Intuition Pro Flex Touring liner is a heat-moldable foam liner.

Our Verdict

The Scarpa Maestrale is the one-boot answer in the Maestrale line, and the roomier of the two shells now that the Scarpa Maestrale RS has narrowed to 101 mm. A 115 flex on a 102 mm last skis 90 to 105 mm underfoot confidently and the polyurethane shell damps firm snow. At 1,460 g per boot the Scarpa Maestrale earns its place on hut trips and dawn patrol alike.
