The Atomic Backland XTD Carbon 120 fits medium-volume and slightly roomy on a 100mm last, wider than the 98mm Backland Carbon and Hawx boots, with a secure heel and a medium instep. After fitting hundreds of skiers we find it suits medium to high-volume feet, and skiers who found the Fischer Transalp or narrow Backlands too tight often fit this boot comfortably. Confirm length with a shell fit, since it runs close to true Mondo.
The Memory Fit shell heat molds and punches, though like all thin touring shells it accepts less modification than a burly alpine boot, so plan modest changes at the sixth-toe and navicular. The stock liner is relatively thick, so skiers between sizes should try the smaller shell first. The instep runs a touch low for very high-arched feet, which may need a punch.
