Ski touring poles are your wizard sticks to another dimension - they allow you to access the furthest and highest reaches of the winter landscape, providing much needed propulsion and balance. Touring poles are offered in either fixed length or adjustable, and usually constructed with aluminum or carbon fiber. A lot of poles are constructed with extended length rubber grip handles, which provide a variety of grip positions. This comes in handy when you're making your way up a spectacularly set switchback skintrack, or traversing a slope. The standard for determining pole length is to flip the pole upside down and grab the pole shaft underneath the basket. Your forearm should be fairly horizontal, or said another way, your forearm and upper arm should form a 90 degree angle. If you want to glide in the skintrack with a bit more speed and powder, then increase your mechanical advantage and leverage by sizing up 5cm or more in length.
