Atomic re-designed their Backland boots for 2020 and we are impressed. With a focus on ease for the uphill, performance on the downhill, and overall simplicity, we are impressed with Atomic's upgrade of a classic boot.
Frictionless pivot and over 70 degrees of articulation mean this boot walks almost as well as your high top hiking boot. And at 1160 grams (size 26.5) it might just be lighter than your hiking boot as well. Combine this with a customizable and breathable liner, and your feet will be in heaven as the vertical feet pass you by effortlessly on the skin track. Prolite construction keeps the boot light without sacrificing any power for the downhill portion of your ski tour. A higher boot cuff provides greater leverage and control over your skis as well. A new BOA system secures your foot evenly in the boot while the all new Free/Lock 4.0 system means that a single lever is all that is required to transition from walk to ski mode.

My girlfriends got into uphilling at Buttermilk resort and I decided I would finally bite the bullet for an uphill setup, and I got the Backland Expert Women's boot. These boots are so light they feel like hiking shoes!! When i'm walking around the flex goes really far and I can slide uphill really nice on my skis. The fit is comfortable, and we had to heat mold the liner which gave me some more room, and with the footbeds we put in they are perfect. I like the lever in the back that flips because it's easy to switch from walk to ski. They aren't the stiffest boots for the downhill, so I think they're best for beginner to intermediate users. Overall, I've been really happy with them!
