Specialized Riprock Coaster

The Riprock Coaster 16 strips a kid's bike down to what a new rider actually needs. There are no gears and no hand brakes to coordinate, just a coaster brake that works by pedaling backward, which is intuitive for a four- or five-year-old and lets them concentrate on balance and steering instead of levers. The A1 Premium aluminum frame keeps the weight manageable at 20 lb and the standover is low enough that a child can straddle the bike flat-footed, which does more for confidence than anything else on the spec sheet.

The tires are the other good decision here. Rhythm Lite 16 by 2.3 inch rubber is wider than most bikes at this size use, and that extra volume adds grip, cushioning, and stability on gravel driveways, grass, and dirt singletrack, not just pavement. The fork is hi-ten steel, the crank is steel with a 26T chainring, and the hubs are bolt-on, which is exactly the right level of durability for a bike that will spend time on its side in the yard. A BMX-style steel bar and a kids' Henge saddle finish it. Fits riders 94 to 107 cm.
