A race shovel is a compromise, sized and built to satisfy a start-line kit check and handle an emergency, not to match a full-size aluminum shovel through a long excavation. For racing and fast familiar terrain that trade is correct. For a day of unfamiliar terrain with a real burial risk, a larger aluminum blade moves more snow and takes more abuse.
