Why We Like It
- The 130 flex and FreeSpine link between cuff and shell give the Shift Alpha BOA 130 real downhill power, enough to drive wide freeride skis inbounds and out.
- The BOA Fit System sits over the instep and pulls the foot back into the ankle pocket rather than crushing the forefoot, which we find delivers strong heel retention for a narrow boot.
- The GripWalk full-rubber sole (ISO 23223) carries certified low-tech pin inserts, so the Shift Alpha BOA 130 pairs with pin/tech touring bindings as well as GripWalk and MNC alpine and AT bindings.
- The TwinLock walk mechanism opens 55 degrees of range of motion for touring and locks solidly for the descent.
- Two cuff buckles and a 50mm elastic power strap back up the BOA dial for a secure, adjustable cuff.
- The My Custom Fit Freeride 4D liner is heat moldable, and the polyurethane shell accepts moderate punching for common problem areas.
Best Uses
- One-boot quiver for resort and backcountry days
- Freeride touring and sidecountry laps
- Driving freeride skis in the 100 to 115 mm range
- Skiers running pin/tech, GripWalk, or MNC bindings
- Low-to-medium-volume, narrow feet
Bootfitter's Advice
The Shift Alpha BOA 130 fits narrow through the forefoot and heel with a medium instep, so after fitting hundreds of skiers we steer it toward low-to-medium-volume feet. The BOA dial and ExoWrap strap wrap the midfoot and hold the heel well, and the 98mm last keeps the toe box tight, which narrow-footed skiers tend to like.
The polyurethane shell heat molds and takes moderate punches for sixth-toe, navicular, and ankle relief, though the BOA hardware routes over the instep and limits how much instep volume we can open. Skiers with wide forefeet or high insteps should plan on fit work or size up, and anyone between sizes should shell fit before buying rather than converting from street-shoe size.
